SPECIAL EDITION - Keeping Up With the Steins & The Secret of My Success

Starting today, 2/1/13, two of my favorite movies that most people I know have never seen are streaming on Netflix. Do yourself a favor and check both of these out - and if you don't have Netflix, I own both on DVD. In honor of this special occasion, I'll be answering my blog questions for these two staples in my movie collection.

Hava Negila, Beer, Wine, Tequila.
This movie takes me back to middle school. I can still chant part of my Torah portion.

  • What made me choose this movie?
    • My gut is telling me that Naomi invited me to see it. I saw this movie at the Drexel in Bexley in college with some or all of these people: Naomi, Paul, Andrea, Lisa, Dana and/or Laura.  Sorry if I included or excluded anyone accidentally.
  • Describe this movie in one word. JUST ONE.
    • Jewy. Did I make that word up?
  • Would I recommend it to a friend (or talk ad nauseum with my friends about it)?
    • Recommend - clearly.
    • Talk ad nauseum?  I'm asking people to read a special blog post about it, so yes! I even harassed Mollie for 6 months to watch this movie. Apparently, all I should have said is "Miranda Cosgrove" and she would have watched it the first night.
  • Did I look anyone or anything up from the movie on IMDB or Wikipedia?
    • Not applicable. I saw this in 2006 and cannot remember (was Wikipedia even popular back then?)
  • If I was trapped on a desert island, which character from this movie would I want to be trapped with and why?
    • Karen Sussman. She gets me. Or the really hot cantor...
  • Did this movie provoke any outward emotional reactions? Crying, laughing out loud, throwing crap across the room, etc./et al. (Warning - I cry A LOT.)
    • Laughed, cried and nodded while relating to the whole movie.
  • Would I stop to watch this movie at any point during a showing on TBS?
    • Each and every time.
  • Would I buy it on sale at Target for $5 or less (or even splurge on it full price)?
    • Got it for Hanukkah back in 2006!

Now, we all love Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club. But, my favorite 80s movie, hands down, watch it every time it is on TBS, is The Secret of My Success.
Michael J. Fox at his finest (Alex P. Keaton who? Marty McFly who? Yeah, I said it).
I love it even more now that I have worked in corporate America for the past 5 1/2 years.

  • What made me choose this movie?
    • I caught it on TBS - I think I was watching TV with my mom. She had seen it before.
  • Describe this movie in one word. JUST ONE.
    • Sneaky.
  • Would I recommend it to a friend (or talk ad nauseum with my friends about it)?
    • Recommend - clearly.
    • Talk ad nauseum?  Yes. Like an onion, so many layers to peel back.
  • Did I look anyone or anything up from the movie on IMDB or Wikipedia?
    • Not applicable, since I first saw this in middle school when these websites either didn't exist or I was unaware of their existence.
  • If I was trapped on a desert island, which character from this movie would I want to be trapped with and why?
    • Brantley. He can do it all and would definitely get us off the island.
  • Did this movie provoke any outward emotional reactions? Crying, laughing out loud, throwing crap across the room, etc./et al. (Warning - I cry A LOT.)
    • Tons of laughing. Hilarious. Especially when they are creeping around the house at night. I once watched this on TBS and they talk about how the music of that scene really sets the tone.
  • Would I stop to watch this movie at any point during a showing on TBS?
    • Of course - this is how I was introduced to it!
  • Would I buy it on sale at Target for $5 or less (or even splurge on it full price)?
    • I've owned this movie for at least 8 years.
