Please notice the sea of cars, as far as the eye can see, in the Papa John's Stadium parking lot on Derby Day. After a few hours of tailgating, per usual, we headed to Churchill Downs. When we got to the bridge on our way, all of us were in awe of how full the parking lot was. While the weather may look beautiful, let me assure you that it was my hottest Derby to date. At Derby, I got to see horses again! The picture below was taken with my arms stretched to capacity, but I was able to see a little bit in between people as they ran by. The funny thing about being on the infield is that when the race is over, no one knows who won. For example, the rumor this year was that Gemologist won, when in fact, Gemologist finished 16th.
Per usual, we did not go out on Saturday after an exhausting day (one year, a group did go out. I opted to stay behind.) One of my favorite Derby traditions is talking to Taylor's mom and step-dad on Saturday night when they return from their Derby wrap up party. Both have led such exciting successful lives and enjoy talking to Taylor's friends - I truly enjoy standing in the kitchen (or watching Sweet Home Alabama on the couch, which is what happened this year) and talking with them. It is so nice of them to open up their home to us each year. Happy Cinco de Derby, everyone...
