How often do you see a glass Jewish star with Chinese characters etched into it? Almost never - but on my first full day in China, I got to see this. Jess did a lot of research for my visit and found that Shanghai was a refuge for Jews during WWII. The synagogue has been turned into the Jewish Refugee Museum, which Jess and I visited this morning. There is so much history here that I was unaware of. Jess always talks about how dirty the Chinese streets are and Holly keeps using the phrase "China juice." Apparently, these claims are true. When we walked into the synagogue, Jess and I were each given 2 shower caps to place over our feet, as pictured below. I wish I could have worn these everywhere.
After we left the museum (which was a feat in itself to find), we headed to Tianzifang, an area of shops, bars and restaurants set back in alleys. Very cute and very fun! We had lunch (at a place called New York Burgers) with Holly and Ian, a friend from their running group. We then headed to a beer festival in the French Concession, which was a lot of fun. There were so many Europeans and so few Chinese people there that I couldn't have told you what country I was in if you had asked...
