Did I go to Europe or China? If it wasn't for all of the Chinese flags flying on the buildings and the Chinese people who wanted to take pictures with me, since I looked different than them, I may not be able to tell you. I went back to The Bund (walking there through the hardware district of Shanghai - hardware store after hardware store next to a hardware store, kind of like Dunkin' Donuts in Boston) to walk around and take in the sights before meeting Jess and her team for lunch. On one side of the river are the European buildings and on the other are the very modern buildings of Pudong - quite the juxtaposition. I walked to Jess's office, where we got in vans and went to a Malaysian restaurant in the French Concession. The food was very interesting and the company was wonderful - Jess's boss, Phillip, is very friendly. After lunch, I headed to an authentic Chinese grocery store to find some fun flavored Oreos (1/2 peach 1/2 grape, green tea, and 1/2 mango 1/2 orange). I also went to a five story pharmacy, the craziest department store I've ever seen and walked down the pedestrian street in Shanghai. Jess came back from work (she actually beat me home!) and we got ready for an authentic Chinese hot pot dinner. I would describe hot pot as a combination between Melting Pot and Mongolian BBQ - you cook your own food in broth at the table, but also make your own dipping sauce for once the meat, vegetables and noodles are cooked. We had so much food and so much fun - then it was time to head to ladies night at a Mexican bar (who can say no to free margaritas?).
We didn't stay too long at ladies night (even though the bar was extremely fun and entertaining), because Jess and I have to get up early to head to Xi'an in the morning! Terra cotta warriors, here we come...
